Bringing together the three letters 1 and 2 Timothy and Titus and exploring their historical and pastoral backgrounds, one sees the complex circumstances surrounding the composition of the three texts, especially 2 Timothy.
This research paper intends to accomplish three motives: first, an exploration of the context of the writing of this passage; second, a thorough examination of the contents of the passage and their nuances; and, finally, a critical analysis of the meaning of the key contents of the passage.
This fact is best understood by a historical investigation into the circumstances surrounding the composition of the texts and a careful consideration of the authenticity of the authorship of the books. Whether Paul made this exhortation or whether it was attributed to him remains a matter of debate among biblical scholars. However, this paper, not without plausible and critical reasons, will argue with the supposition that Paul wrote this passage and the entire book of 2 Timothy during his second imprisonment in Rome.
Many scholars hold that only seven of the letters attributed to Paul — 1Thessalonians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philemon, Romans, and Philippians — were written by Paul, while others are pseudepigraphical works attributed to Paul. First, we are aware that Paul wrote some letters literally by himself Gal while others he dictated for his amanuensis to write. While the passage is incorporated in the lectionary as it stands in the Scripture, it will be easier to understand the text when reading in light of the entire book. Moreover, the concerns in the passage are not uncommon throughout the pastoral letters except for , where Paul talks about the divine authorship of the Bible.
Incidents where Paul instructs Timothy and Titus on morality, missionary values, pastoral leadership concerns and virtues are found throughout the pastoral letters. From the recurring themes in the pastoral letters, we understand that, in 2 Timothy, Paul was almost writing on the same concerns he had earlier addressed in 1Timothy. However, he would not just have written to repeat himself.
